Anawilundawa Sanctuary

Located within a convenient 2-hour drive from the airport, Anawilundawa Ramsar wetland is a sanctuary celebrated for the convergence of three distinct ecosystems: the forest wetlands, encompassing mangrove- and freshwater swamps; the coastal saltwater ecosystem; and the freshwater lakes. This extraordinary integration of environments has given rise to a distinctive ecological habitat, serving as a haven for over 150 bird species, 20 mammal species, and 70 butterfly species, and contributes to more than 50% of Sri Lanka’s freshwater fish diversity.
