These two national parks, characterized by diverse terrain and encompassing dry evergreen and scrub forests, along with vast grasslands bordering the ancient tanks of Minneriya and Kaudulla, are home to massive herds of elephants. These lavish plains set the stage for one of the must-see wildlife spectacles in Sri Lanka, ‘The Gathering of Elephants,’ occurring from June to October each year, where hundreds of elephants daily gather at the water’s edge to feed on the lush green grass. In addition to these gentle giants, the parks also provide havens for over 160 species of birds.
